In an act of sheer courage and selflessness(as if) I am now going to let you have peeks at my ill equipped wardrobe! So please warmly welcome my new section CLOSET DIARIES – considering the size of my matchbox wardrobe, the longevity of this section is questionable but stop me if you can 😛 Talking about minuscule closets and even smaller budgets, as much as I’d like to buy every piece of clothing in sight, the sad reality is I’d rather invest in pieces that I can pair with as many ensembles as possible. So in my first edition of this “self – proclaimed” genius idea I share with you what I think should be a ‘Maybe – have’ list of sweaters 🙂 ( you’ll still need them through spring) (Disclaimer:Not all of them are pictured below)
1. The EVERYDAYERSs: The no frill pieces, the warm comfortable basics, the ones you automatically reach out for to pair with everything – V neck/scoop neck/cardigans in a neutral palette of grey, black, navy, ecru and khaki. Start collecting here. 🙂
2. The “I LOVE ME SOME COLOR TODAY”ers: I have a few colored cable knit sweaters which I like to wear when I am tired of looking washed out. Kelly green, red, yellow, and oxblood have been my go-tos this season.
3. The PATTERN LOVER : Patterned sweaters are a new-found love for me. Polka dots, fair isle patterns and stripes are great fun additions to your collection. I also like them a tad oversized.
4. The ” SPECIAL SOMETHINGS”: These are the truly trend driven pieces – My pearl sweater, the peach cardigan with chiffon panels, foil printed chunkies, cable knit sweaters with leather sleeves and crochet insets….. these are pieces I wear occasionally but the ones I truly debate on whether or not to buy 🙂
Are you a sweater junkie like I am? Which ones are your favorite? 😀
Okaaay my titles are on a trip lately but that’s beside the point now:) You know that feeling when you pick out a piece with horizontal stripes that looks simply divine on the hanger, on the mannequin and even your catty co-worker but when you try it on, you just want to kick the mirror in frustration? No? I hate you then 😛 The rest of you nodding in affirmation can feel my pain. I have religiously stayed away from wide bold stripes that run across my body no matter how appealing they look! But I decided to step out of my comfort zone to try and wear stark stripes when they came in the form of this super soft drapey cardigan. The pattern actually looks diagonal(read: flattering) when you wear them, which can be a win-win for stripe wary folks. Who’s with me on this? 🙂
PS: Thou shalt not be fooled by me pretending to casually pose like it were a pleasant fall day. I only gave my coat a breather for about 20 secs 🙂 Oh and HAPPY WEEKEND 😀
New York has been a popsicle for the last two days .. and as I type this there’s a cold draft outside my window causing my teeth to cchhaaatteeerr! 🙂 I truly envy those brave souls who still manage to keep a semblance of fashion forwardness in their wardrobe with all their fancy wools and furs when it’s -13 outside. Sadly, my anorak and wool jacket have failed me and it’s only my puffer that can keep me toasty at this point! It totally makes you look bleargh but small price to pay…
Once upon a time I was a not-so young girl who fooled myself into thinking that applying a coat of lipstick unto my lips would cause me to look like a vamp/too grown up/too attention seeking. 😛 Cut to the present( Merely an 8 months later) and you have yourselves a lippie aficionado 🙂 ( I still refuse to try a blush/ foundation/insert other cosmetic product here) I picked out my first lipstick to wear to my graduation ceremony – I was near broke and walked into the nearest CVS, bought the first red I liked and the rest( As I’d like to dramatically put it) is history:D I have given into the temptation of buying an occasional(budget permitting) MAC and NARS but I still love my drugstore lispticks to death:D I have since bought most of my lipsticks based on user reviews; there will always be hits and misses but be assured that these 6 picks are intended to help a novice and slightly broke lipstick lover stay covered. In case you are wondering about complexion issues, I have friends(ethnically diverse if you will) who use these too and it looks good on almost all of them:) So here is <drumroll> the list( Please overlook the terrible lighting:))
1. Revlon Spicy Cinnamon – A fall favorite matte lipstick that’s perfect for the evening
2. Rimmel Kiss of Life – A bluish matte red that stays put.. forever!!
5. Revlon Peach – Fools people into thinking you have no lipstick on at all except your lips look ammaazzingg!:)
6. Maybelline Coral Crush – A pinkish coral which will be your spring go-to item.Remember whatever you wear, wear it with confidence..:D Also I am always on the lookout for newer shades to try so won’t you please feel free to suggest your favorites? 🙂
Some of you’ll ( In the USA) are probably still in the midst of an extended holiday( Hail MLK!) while some of us unlucky souls trudged to work:P Either ways mondays are no fun! But the thought of going back to my coffee crumb cake at home is heartening! 😛 My house still smells of cinnamon.2. I am not a super nerd but a trip to the Forbidden planet comic store near union square got me visibly excited( ok a shade too close to crazy) 🙂 3. A walk along the pier in the morning is always awe inspiring and it’s even more surprising when you realize a phone camera(they make ’em so fancy these days) can take such stunning pictures :D( Courtesy: prat)4. Eyeballed Mrs O’s hair cut when Prez O was sworn in for his second term 😀 5. I went for my monthly grocery haul to Trader Joe’s and look what I found! 😀 This hand cream provides my ninety year old hands with some much needed relief(at $1.99) 😛Happy Happy week ! 🙂
Of late, several of my blog regulars have expressed interest in wanting to know more about my dressing style. No, for real! So unfortunately the rest of you who aren’t, still might have to endure these more-regular- than-I’d-like posts that I would do on some of the looks of mine. 🙂 Considering I am an “on the fly” dresser, this is going to be fun 😀 For starters, here’s one which I thought should make the cut simply because 1. It’s fun to wear color in winter 2. It’s even more fun to go monochrome and 3. Spring’s coming and green is going to be all the rage :D. (See it wasn’t so bad after all!) Have a fabulous weekend everyone 😀
While a friend and I were playing catch up recently and exchanging shopping notes she suddenly went ” Everything will look better on you because you are slim” on me..I laughed it off but my mind was busy thinking Whooaa 1. That’s not true..( I look truly hideous in most jackets, gym clothes, sleeveless tees, sheath dresses.. and a million other things) 2. Until recently I used to be ginormousss .. 3. And I am nowhere close to thin now but I have finally made peace with my dress sizes 😀 So let me take this as an opportunity to share my battle with the bulge( Because I am dramatic like that! ) 🙂
I was always a plump child. Until when I was about 10, my mom simply coaxed me into believing that I was ” very healthy/big-boned “. But as I grew older, and my weight grew with it, I was starting to feel the brunt of it especially since “pleasantly plump” had become “faaaatttyyy”. My mom enrolled me in a bunch of classes that required me to indulge in plenty of physical activity but it had zero effect on my lard. She even tried to get me to eat “healthy”( for the record snacking rules:P) and join a gym but it was a short-lived phase. Sure I lost plenty of weight but quickly gained it back and some more 🙂 But let me tell you I was a happy teen in general ( my mom on the other hand would tell you a different story- apparently I was riddled with body issues and terrorized her in turn :P) – My schoolmates never mocked me( at least to my face), I was oblivious of the fact that a smaller frame meant more attention from the opposite sex( True story), and I happily took solace in my textbooks until I reached college. This was when the cracks started to show…. the scales tipped at 90 kgs/198 pounds and I was painfully aware of the fact that most nice clothes “didn’t fit right” Also throw in the fact that I was at a fashion school and tada…I was constantly in between periods of being “happy” and “extremely depressed”. By now I hated my body( I also hated being photographed) and was trying to punish it by indulging in all sorts of yoyo diets. My weight was swinging wildly and I cried at the drop of a hat!(Not a happy place to be) I knew my weight had no bearing on my personality but I started to realize that a healthy body image was necessary for me to be “me”. I scrapped all my insane diets, joined a gym and it took me a good 2 years( hard but rewarding) to find my footing.( My mom was amazing through it all) I realized that each routine and each diet works differently for different people. For the first time in years I actually embraced my body and worked with it. I can now safely say that I know what makes me gain weight and what I need to lose the pounds. Also I never deny myself of any of my favorite foods; I still hit the gym when I am up to it ( I prefer walking)and currently weigh around 120-123 pounds depending on when my sweet tooth decides to take over. 😀Yes, there are days when I look at myself in the mirror and see the plump me staring back, there are days when I can only notice the unflattering bits, there are times when I try on a cute dress and get angry at how terrible it looks on me, I still have a below average body image(ask Prat), and I still sometimes aspire for the ideal “skinny” – but during these times I remind myself( sometimes he does it for me) of how far I have come and how proud I should be .. and I am! 🙂
PS: Some of these photos havent seen the light in ages, so it’s a big deal for me to put them up 😀 and I couldn’t resist doing the then, now scenario( Been wanting to do it foreeveerr! :P)
Let’s admit it, prep might not be our go-to style but when done right it almost always makes for flawless style (Hello Nick Wooster) As you regular readers know, I enjoy looking like a mess most of the time 🙂 but the same cannot be said about Prat, who swears by preppy dressing. I always give him an earful about how “too perfect” his style is but I recognize a good outfit when I see one …. so here it is, for your eyes only 😀 ( Psst.. I think it had to do with the fact that he switched his favorite blazer with the leather jacket and the polka dot socks <3) 😀
