Beach, Color, Prada, retro, round frame, shades, summer, sunglasses

Now that summer is here, sunnies are out full force… So for those of you’ll wanting to buy some sunglasses, here are some pointers on what is trending:)

1. Oversized & Round: Large shades are pretty much around for most part but now they get an update in fun colors – neons, pastels, ombre and much more 🙂 What’s more the frames are super round and flatter most face shapes(proof below). How  perfect would these be on the beach or by the pool?2. Quirky: Now is the time to choose frames that are fun and quirky. Be it a 50’s inspired cat eye, or detailed baroque style, the more unique they are the better.. Perfect for those summer dresses B)Just be sure to pick something that suits your face shape.. and something that makes you smile 😀 I have my eyes on a pair of rayban clubmasters *drool*

1950, feminine, Prada, print, sunglasses

While The MET gala celebrates Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli in their new exhibit, I thought why not make my own tribute(through a post of course) to M’me Prada and her signature 50’s vibe. Here are a few pointers to working the 50’s look.

1. Prints Charming – Wear some “look at me” dramatic prints – if you are brave enough try pairing clashing prints.

2. Get all tied up – Fashion a printed scarf into a tie/semi turban

3. I have my “eyes” on you – Get your hands on some wacky – in – a good way sunglasses in shapes that are too cool to be true.

4. Keep an eye on your hemlines, its all about the lady like full skirt and tea length dresses. Think Jason Wu.

5. Pay attention to your hair – pick a style that could range from Soft waves to super coiffed elaborate dos

And don’t forget to choose a few pieces of statement jewelry……

Above all, pick no more than two/three of the above and keep the rest contemporary by adding elements of your own style(a la the lady in leather above), unless of course you are playing dress up 😛

Elsa Schiaparelli, Exhibition, MET, Prada

A while ago, I had posted here about the one of a kind exhibition at the MET where Prada and Schiaparelli are set to have a conversation; albeit a curated one 🙂 Well, it’s almost here.. and the MET has now released a preview on what to expect. I had high expectations from this venture to begin with and this has just only furthered my interest. By the looks of these images, the museum has done a great job of seamlessly linking the body of work of both these designer. Also how awesome and rad is Schiaparelli’s work for her time? Pure Genius!

Virtues of copying(No,really!)

“Imitation is the best form of flattery!”

Apparently not, considering the number of brands involved in legal battles with each other over copying issues. In the recent past there was the Louboutin and YSL case( I side with YSL on this one), now currently Gucci has taken Guess to task for “flattering” them a little too much. Before the moral police are up in arms, let me clarify that I am against blatantly knocking off products especially like the case above where Guess sneakily tries to create a similar logo which is borderline trademark infringement so am pretty sure Gucci will trump this one. But let’s look at the big picture here, have you wondered why the fashion industry does not have as much copyright protection unlike say electronics or pharmaceuticals? Here’s something to chew on – The virtues of copying(Not to be confused with counterfeit please) 🙂H&M(left) loves Carven a little too much 😉

1. Deny it all you want but copying is one of the reasons, fashion is available to everyone across the board.( It’s no secret, every one does it- from other designers, from vintage, from their own archives) If not it would be restricted to only those who can afford the Chanels and Guccis of the world.Snooki pays “tribute” to McQueen. I don’t even have to tell you which is which here.

2. Designers and brands know they are going to be copied all the time and this pushes them to up the ante and innovate products that are more unique and difficult to copy. Steve Madden (right) does a version of the Miu Miu shoe

 3. Trends turn over faster. Once a style hits the masses, the “fashion innovators” dont want to stick with it and immediately find something else to obsess over. Think about it! 4. We would have no Zara and H&M and that would be a real shame! 🙂

I know every time people see a knock- off of a designer(take any of the examples above) there’s a huge debate on how it takes away from the reputation and sales of the original brand. Well, some one asked Tom Ford exactly the same question and he simply said “The person who buys the knock off isn’t our customer.” I have to agree with him. I feel well established designers dont hurt as much from their high street counter parts ripping them off, it’s only up and coming designers(like the ones on Etsy) who might have real issues when they fall victims to this age old practice 😦 Btw if you haven’t already judged me by this point, let me add that if I could afford the original I would buy it in a blink!(smiles weakly):)

Had I made a dollar for every mint item I’ve seen this month, I’d have my own apartment! Not really, but you get the idea 🙂 ! I know I’ve been harping(annoyingly so) about mint being big this spring!  And I patted myself on the back when I saw PRADA’s window display at SOHO this week.

When prada puts out a bag in this color you know you need to run and buy yourself some mint( Kidding. not) Here are somethings that might inspire you to make friends with this fresh pick:)

Not convinced about making some space in your wardrobe? Accessories to the rescue!

Still not taking the bait? Try painting your nails, in a shade of mint that flatters your skin tone and you’ll be a fan for life 🙂Do I still see you looking skeptical? Don’t tell me I didn’t try 🙂 Make the most of the weather and head out for some mint and chocolate chip ice cream at Alphabet scoop! 🙂 Happy spring everyone!

Elsa Schiaparelli, Exhibition, MET, Prada

Elsa + Muiccia soucre: http://www.metmuseum.org

Following the success of the Alexander McQueen: Savage beauty, the Met is opening the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. What excites me the most is the interesting format in which the exhibit is to be curated – on the lines of a fictional conversation between two women from completely different eras using 80 pieces from their collection. The points of showcase will include similarities in their aesthetic, the way they approached different themes and their treatment of the female form through the ages based on their influences. While this venture sounds interesting, I still cannot wrap my head around why they would try to nit pick similarities between these two women. Agreed they are both italian, have strong personalities and a solid body of work, but Prada has never referenced to Schiaparelli in any of her collections. Also the way I see it now, some of the connections made, seem forced. There might be the threat of the each of the designer’s aesthetic being lost to the “commercial” element. I would have thought Schiaparelli deserved her own solo exhibition, but I am guessing the Met wanted a “prada” to bring in the crowds! Either ways a must visit for me!

The exhibition runs 10th May – 19th Aug at the Met
